Richie Evans #61 Modified Cavalier

This beautiful orange small block Chevy was designed and built by Richie Evans and Billy Nacewicez in 1984. Cars built by the duo were famous for the signature orange paint scheme that was used throughout Richie Evans’ racing career.

Evans won over 500 races and 26 track titles in the Northeast during his career. He also won the NASCAR National Modified Champion in 1973 and starting in 1978 he won the championship 7 years in a row.

Unfortunately, on October 24, 1985, just a week after earning the 1985 National Modified title, Evans was killed in a crash at Martinsville Speedway during practice. He was 44 years old.

On June 14, 2011, Evans was elected into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He was one of the Hall of Fame’s first 15 inductees and the first Hall of Famer from outside NASCAR’s premier series.

Richie Evans’ accomplishments earned him a spot on the list of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers and was named the #1 Modified driver. His #61 remains the only number ever official retired by NASCAR.
